Name: SKCS Terry M. Haines, USNR-R From: Central Point, Oregon: NMCB-18 Comments: Chiefs do run the Navy as long as we have the courage, honor and commitment to do our job. I feel that we need to do a better job within the chief's community of preparing our chiefs for the awesome responsibility that we have been given. We are all aware of the comparison of chief to E7. There are too many E7s out there who did not fully appreciate what the expectations were that they would assume when they put those anchors on. We can all appreciate the hard work it took to become selected as a chief, but the work that must be done after selection to ensure that we can perform to the level required to "run the Navy" is lacking. A two week course in leadership development is a start, but it is only a start. There needs to be a strong "goat locker" at every command that continues to develop the newer chiefs. The leadership course should be mandatory for all new chiefs within the first year of selection. Officers require newly selected officers to go to OCS within a specified period of time, why not chiefs? What say all of you? |

Name: SKC Valerie Fleckner Comments: This has got to be one of the Koolest pages on the web. I love the music, just puts you in the mood. I came in active in 1978 spent 1 year bouncing from school to school, my name was Brown back then, too. In Orlando I went to BE&E school from Jan-Mar79, then on to Great Lakes(May-Jul79) ET'A' school where I promptly flunked out, but I had such a pretty face they gave me another school. SK'A' school in Meridian(AUG 79),where after two weeks of an 8 wk course I graduated with honors, all that prior studying must've finally caught up with me.haaahaaa! My first 'real' duty station was Yorktown Naval Weapon Station(Sep79-Nov81) at which time I promptly left the Navy active forces to dedicate myself as a full time reservist...ahh the life! I returned home to Bremerton, WA and have been assigned to various units, NSC Puget Sound 122, MIUW 101, DDRW Det122, NMCB-18 where I am now. It's been fun and it's been 20 years, and if I stay healthy and live right, I'll stay another 10 and retire when they kick me out. Life is good! And this web page is soooo KOOL! I wish I had known about it sooner, there is so much to see, read, learn....This should be on our "must read" list. Thanks for letting me rattle, I tend to do that, but I do have fun! |

Name: STGCM Forrest A. Baxter Comments: What a wonderful site, Shipmate. I started out my career as an Electronics Technician (ET)in 1967. While I was stationed at Naval Facility Nantucket, Massachusetts, a new rating was created call Ocean Systems Technician (OT)in 1971. I became an OT until they ended my rating in 1987. My rating was then changed to STG. I was only able to put in 10 years on active duty, but I was able to slip in a little more than 20 (so far) in the reserve component. I communicate with many of my shipmates from Argentia, Newfoundland. These shipmates are....Rita Anderson, J.L. (Jim) Craft, Art LaFaro, Eddie Estabon, and Cliff Pautz. I am trying to reestablish contact with others. I will pass the word on your great web site. Best regards....back to Navy Birthday Ball last-minute details. STGCM Forrest A. Baxter |
