Just a note to inform all and sundry of the U.S. Naval Radio Station, Thurso, Scotland reunion being planned for the summer of 2000. If you are interested in attending or participating in the planning contact me and we'll assign a billet. The reunion is for anyone assigned to Forss or Murkle anytime during the thirty-odd years the base was in commission. Perhaps, if we muster enough interested folks, a cheaper fare can be negotiated...anyway, great site Master Chief.

Huston, YNC/PNC(?...Think YNC...Served on USS Sancutuary (AH-17)in period when she had first sexually-mixed crew for a large ship aboard...funny thing....the women complained of carryiong up the normal 30-35 Gal. trashcans from the mess decks, heck it was only about a 35-40 foot (vertical) climb, don't know what the problem was...when advised of the complaint that the ladies felt that the cans were too heavy, and too large, Capt.Rodgers looked at the XO, and said, XO, if the 35 Gal. cans are too much, lets see if we can 20 gal> cans.....of course this was possible...gals didn't get off mess cooking (original plan)....nor get out of carrying the cans, just had to make almost twice the trips to carry the garbage out.....See youse around the "locker....John Elletrt P.S., Masterful job, Masterchief

Made CPO in 95 and it took a little while to realize what being "The Chief" really meant. Now, I help plan CPO Indoc and the Initiation. Having this resource available is almost as good as having you "old-timers" sit down with me and tell me how it used to be. We are the future of this Navy and the traditions we lose are the tomorrows thrown away. Retired, Active, Reserve, and VTU...stay the course...stay together. Communicate.

Stationed in VQ-1, RANGER and ENTERPRISE, Reserve Center Seattle, and VR-51 Det Whidbey (now VR-61). I would like to hear from old shipmates, particularly Mike Lawrence who was in VQ-1 from about '71-'75. He was previously an AM, re-enlisted in late '70s. I would also like to contact AZ2 Joyce (Silverstein) Rudman who was assigned to VR-51 Det Whidbey in the late '70's. Her husband is a retired Chief, EMC I think. My phone (206) 217-6616.

Great site Master Chief! Was fortunate enough to find the Navy in 1975; served aboard USS Piedmont, AD-17, 1975-1976, USS Detroit, AOE-4, 1977-1979. Went back to the reserves in 1990 with MIUWU-105, and am currently still with them in Long Beach, CA. Does anyone out there know of MMCM Young, who served aboard the Detroit in 1977? It is because of him, and my father, that I am the man I am today. As Chiefs, past, present and future, we have the awesome responsibility of influencing and directing the lives of the future leaders of our Navy and communities. I pray I live up to the expectations of "Master" Young everyday; were it not for him my life would surely have been lost. Semper Vigilante...Spence

Broke service, reenlisted to a body holding unit until transfering to MIUW 105, Long Beach in '75 until I retired in '92. Did one side trip to USS Duncan FFG-10 (81-83)when it was commissioned a Reserve training unit. Deployed with 105 to Desert Storm. Thrilled to find a web-site for Navy Chief Petty Officers. Great site! I joined the Navy in Aug 1954 and retired in Aug 1978 as a Chief TRADEVMAN (Training Devices Technician). After Boot Camp and a few schools, ended up in a MATS squadron, VR-7, at Hickam AFB, Honolulu, Hawaii. Became an aircrewman in R7Vs (Constellations), flying troops between the States, Japan and many islands in between. Then maintained training devices and flight simulators, in various commands until Jan 1961. From Jan 1961 to Aug 1969, I was an enlisted A3D Bombardier Navigator and a RA5C Reconnaissance Attack Navigator, serving in VAH-3/RVAH-3 and VAH-9/RVAH-9. Made three MED deployments aboard the USS Saratoga, CVA-60. Then the "Era of the Enlisted Bombardier/Navigator" came to an end. My last duty station was in NAS Norfolk,VA, where I was the CPO in charge of an "E2C Hawkeye" Operational Flight Trainer. Retired out of Norfolk, VA. Would like to locate other TDs and fellow enlisted Bombardier/Navigators. I was sad to see the TD (TRADEVMAN) rating disappear.
