It's sad to know that most folks treat tomorrow as just another day off or another sale at a store. Veterans Day is much more than that to me. It is a day that we honor our veterans past and present. That is why I want to take this time to salute and thank each one of you for the sacrifices you have made. Each one of you has contributed a part of your life to insure that our country enjoys the freedoms we hold so dear. I encourage each one of you to participate or attend a Veterans Day ceremony, visit with the veterans at the VA Hospital, join a veterans organization, or just call a old shipmate or comrade in arms and reminisce about the camaraderie we all enjoyed so much."Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: I served in the United States Navy."- John F. Hello Shipmate: I'd like to invite all of my fellow Chief's to visit the Navy Memorial's new website and visit the Navy Log online at: http://www.lonesailor.org/NavyLog/NavyLogMiniHub.html The Navy Log records naval service information of present and former members of America's sea services, living or deceased, in whose names contributions have been made for the continuation of the mission of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation. Approaching an enrollment of a quarter-million names (and tens of thousands of photos), the Log is on continuous display in the Navy Log Room on the Gallery Deck. The touch of a video screen brings into view the entry for any individual in the Log --displaying name, branch of service, rate or rank, dates of service, date and place of birth, duty stations and awards, a photograph provided by the sponsor, along with when and where the picture was taken. I hope you'll visit the Navy Log and review your Log and if your not entered perhaps consider logging in today. Thanks for your support! David J. Michael, NCCM(SW), USN (Ret.) Director Navy Log

Enlisted June 20,1956. Boot, San Diego (CC BMC Nellums) Airman School, Norman, Okla. Photo School, Pensacola Guantanamo (NASLeeward Point Photo Lab, with stint as base policeman) march "57-March'59. (During the "Revolution". We always said "two years duty, four months liberty.") I can't remember my first Chief's name right now. He was killed in a car wreck in Caimanera. He's the one who told me "Only people who do things make mistakes." He was relieved by PHCM Dave Benton. Made 3rd class here. March '59-March'60, VFP62 at Jacksonville and Cecil NAS. Made 2nd. Six months on F8U-1Ps, six in photo lab. April '60 to October '63, Naval Photo Center, Anacostia, D.C. Worked at the White House, making movies for foreign visitors to President Kennedy. Last saw him about a month before DALLAS. Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group, January '64-August '64, including four month in PacDet Yokusuka. We suited up to go to the Tonkin Gulf, but didn't make the trip. Returned early to attend special one course in motion picture production at the University of Southern California. The Navy sent twelve selected First Class and Chiefs to this course each year. I had made 1st class in D.C. I had been tutored there by Dick (Emerson Richard)Barlow and Charley Colwell, Korean Vets about whom Hank Searls wrote "Cry for Happy". The movie starred Glenn Ford and Donald Oconner. Worked for Pat Cady in Washingon, too. Rest his soul. Old hands will also remember Ernie Meese and Jay Skidmore, a diver who also walked out of Chosin with the Marines. He kept the '03 Springfield sniper rifle he traded his camera for when it was shot up. Pardon my longwindedness, but I haven't seen these guys in 30+years. After tthe year in college, I was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet Combat Camera Group, known for a short while as Mobile Photographic Unit, Atlantic, in Norfolk.Gerry Pulley was CO. He and I appeared on a local TV station in Portsmouth to advertise the USC training we had received. Spent six months in the Naples detachment. The OIC was another mustang who's name escapes me at the moment. He drove a Fiat convertible with abandon; once, flying around a traffic circle in Naples, he brought a policeman to his knees in supplication not to run him down! (We missed him.) Spent 45 days in Palomares, Spain, covering th erecovery of four A-bombs the Air Force had lost in an air-to-air whil refueling. My footage provided the bulk of "Lost and Found-One H-Bomb" produced by CBS News. (The three on the ground were found quickly. The one in the water was a bear to locate. We had Alvin and the Reynolds Aluminaut, deep water submersibles, to conduct the search, which was successful after 45 days. Jon Lindbergh, son of Charles, was there, employed by Ocean Systems.I got out in August '67, and worked for Jerry Crowder in Atlanta, as a cameraman. Went back in the Reserves in '71, at NAS Atlanta in Marietta, Georgia. I retired as CPO in OCtober 1980.Some of these names, dates and places will stir memories in some of the older shipmates, especially photo types. I'd like very much to hear from them, especially Ron Hamilton and Mark Burke.
