Comments: Gurnard Plankowner. On Board from August 1967 to August 1970. Paid a visit to the boat in December 1993 a few days shy of the 25th anniversary of its commissioning. Had a chance to speak with the current CO. They were preparing for a big inspection and some of the younger crewmembers were impressed by a plankowner coming to visit.

Comments: Join the navy in 1970, went to bootcamp in Great Lakes then to Submarine School, Groton Conn. After completing Submarine school my first boat was the USS GRENADIAR (SS 525) IN Key West, Fla From there I was transfered to USS VON Steuben (SSBN 632) for two patrols. Then a tour of shore duty at Naval Station, Great Lakes IL. After this tour was completed I transfered to USS TAUTOG (639) in Pearl Harbor. When the tour was completed on TAUTOG I got out for awhile to try civilain life(mistake), I lasted 1 year and was back in the Navy on my way to Norfolk, VA to the USS MEMPHIS (SSN 691). I served a tour at CSS 6 staff as the Squardon Career Counselor I then transfered to USS BALTIMORE (SSN 704) as the Chief of the Boat in Aug 88. When I completed my tour on Baltimore I transfered to Submarine Training Faculity Norfolk VA as the Engineering Dept LPO, where I retired in Apr 1993.

It was good to see the Chief Community is still like family.Retired in "85" and still miss the military type family I grew up with. I work for County Goverment now and let me tell you they are a different breed. They all seem to be of the "I" generation. In the Navy it was all about "Us" "We" teamwork. Went to Great Lakes for boot camp in Sept 82. " A" school to follow and on to NAS Jacksonville to VP-45. Stayed till Feb 86 and went up to NAS Oceana to VF-101 for instructor duty at FRAMP. Finished up in Dec 89 and came back to sunny Florida to NAS Cecil Field, (greatest Naval base ever) at VFA-137, making the final cruise on the USS Forrestal. Made the homeport change to NAS Lemoore till Dec 93. Came back to NAS Cecil Field to VFA-37 cruising on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower. Left in Oct 96 to the Blue Angels, only stayed a year because that year had in it, the best day of my life!!!!! Moving on in Oct 97 to VFA-131 to cruise on the USS John C Stennis and take her around the world to her new home in San Diego. Made another homeport change when the greatest Naval Air Station closed to NAS Oceana till Nov 99. Currently at NAMTRAGRU JAX and loving shore duty.....for now. Take care all my brothers still standing the watch. Looking forward to being with the brothers who have been relieved.

I enlisted in the Navy in Jan. 47 and went to Boot Camp at Bainbridge MD. While there helped to decommission the base which was later openned during I think the Korean War. I lost all my papers covering that period of my Navy life and am wondering if there is anyone out there who was at Bainbride from Jan to April 47.

While watching the Sugar Bowl (Yea, Seminoles!) on TV last night, heard both of the "stupid" announcers say that this was for the first college football championship of the 21st Century. Have also heard similar comments on other TV and news programs. Apparently our "intelligent" media personalities do not know that the 21st Century starts January 1, 2001!!!

We may have crossed paths there. PHCS Griffeths, you were a couple of years ahead of me. I enlisted in June '56, and was in Norman the winter of '56-7, when the wind came straight out of Canada! I enlisted in the U.S. Navy on my seventeenth birthday at NAVCRUITSTA Pittsburg, PA. The same day found me looking at the locked gates of U.S. NTC. Great Lakes, IL. After an accelerated boot camp, I reported to the U.S.S. Shangri-La (CVA-38) as a deck seamen. Next I received SERE and weapons training and then reported to the U.S. Naval Support Activity Danang, Vietnam as a Security Guard. After two tours in country, I left the active Fleet and joined NRC Little Creek, VA as an RD3. Here for the next three months, I served on the U.S.S. Williard Keith. Upon re-enlistment in the active Navy, I reported to the U.S.S. Guam (LPH-9) and there became a Shellback after transiting the Panama Canal in support of earthquake relief efforts for Peru. My next assignment as an RD2 was instructor in ASW tactics at the LANTFLEASW TRACSCOL Norfolk, VA. After almost three years, I left as an OS1 and reported to PRE COM for the U.S.S. Moinester (FF-1097). In the year of my divorce (1979), I left Moinester as a plank owner and reported to NAVCRUITDIST Indianapolis, IN. After snagging my one recruit and being initiated into the ranks of Chief Petty Officer, I reported to FLECOMBATTRACENLANT as an instructor in ASW Air Control. My next assignment was onboard U.S.S. Aylwin (FF-1081) as leading Chief Operations. Yep, you guessed it I donned my star right after I reported onboard. My final assignment was at NAVSPACECOM Dahlgren, VA as the first member of NAVSPASUR DET ALPHA. Once again, I became a plank owner. This time a shore establishment (FLTSURVSUPPCOM Chesapeake, VA). I retired end of June 1997 after almost 22 years of a wonderful life and career.
