Record 7327 Name: Ron Gaines MTCM(SW/SS) USN RET Website: Glacier From: Bridgeport CT Time: 2000-05-10 13:46:21 Comments: Hi Shipmates. Let me introduce myself. I am Ron Gaines. I am a recently retired Command Master Chief. My last assignment was as the CMC of Mine Warfare Command in Corpus Christi. I have just signed on with an organization called the Glacier Society. Our goal is the restoration of the former USS Glacier (AGB4), an Icebreaker. She is currently at a mooring near San Francisco. We soon hope to have our bill passed in Congress transferring title to us. At that time we will have her overhauled and SAIL her to Bridgeport CT. You read right. We intend to sail her. She will act as a semi-operational Historic museum and also serve to educate people from kindergarten to college level students about the Navy and Coast Guard, as well as polar exploration. My tasks here include: Membership, volunteer recruitment (both here in CT and on the ship itself), parts location for the ship, equipment location and procurement (such as motorwhale boats and landing craft) and fundraising (primarily through increasing membership in the Society. I am also talking with the Chairman about ways to use Glacier as a recruiting tool for both the Navy and the Coast Guard. I am not sure how many members you have in the San Francisco area, or if any where Icebreaker Sailors, but we could use volunteer help on the ship from time to time, or even here in the main office here in Bridgeport. We are also trying to increase membership, and the web site outlines various membership levels. I can be reached at this address, (this address is on loan from the company who owns our building while we work out bugs in our pop account), at ron@2glaciersociety.org, or at the following phone numbers: 1-203-377-4414 EXT. 356, or 1-800-327-8766 EXT. 356. We also have a few items in stock for sale right now, a number of golf type shirts and USS Glacier Navy ball caps. We will be ordering many more different items such as coffee cups, key chains and the like very soon. You can check out our website at www.glaciersociety.org. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions or provide you with more info. Thanks again Shipmate. Ron |
