Prouldy served in the US Navy from July 7, 1978 to January 31, 2001. Commissioned the USS FLETCHER (DD 992), served on the USS WHITE PLAINS (AFS 4), decommissioned the USS MISSOURI (BB 63), and served on the USS CALIFORNIA (CGN 36). "GUNSLINGER", cut my teeth on the MK 86 Digital Fire Control System on the USS FLETCHER, did two tours in the Fire Controlman school house in Great Lakes, IL teaching the MK 86 gunnery system to the next generation of Gunslingers, and spent three years on the "Golden Grizzly" (USS CALIFORNIA) maintaining the Navy's oldest MK 86 gunnery system at the peak of performance.

Thought this was worth reading.......... Barber Shop In a small town near Washington, DC, a barber opened his shop for business. A young enlisted Marine comes in to get a "high and tight." The barber asked the young Marine about his service, and a lot of small talk takes place. After the haircut is complete, the Marine opens his wallet and the barber said, "It's on the house Marine. Thanks for your service to this great nation." The next morning as the barber goes to open his shop, there is a box on his doorstep. In the box was a note of thanks and a "SEMPER FI" bright red T-shirt. That same morning a young Army G.I. comes in for a haircut. The same sort of story happens. They talk about the Army and other small talk. After the haircut is complete, the G.I. stands and reaches for his wallet. The barber says, "No thanks, son. It's on the house. Thank you for your service to our country." The next morning as the man is opening his barbershop, on the doorstep is a box with an Army ball cap and a thank you note. That same day, a Master Chief comes in for a haircut. He is decked out in his full dress blues. The barber is impressed and again, the same things happen...small talk about the service. When the Master Chief goes to pay, again the barber says, "Not required, Master Chief, it's on the house. Thanks for your service to this great nation." You guessed it, the next morning, as the barber went to open his shop, there on his doorstep ...were three more Master Chiefs!

I was mustered out in June 1971 at NATC Patuxent River, MD after 20 years service in avionics. I ended boot camp at U.S.Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA on 9 August 1951 with company 693 commanded by G.F. Graffe BMC. Road a troop Train to NATTC Jacksonville, FL for AN(P) school Class 11D Sec C. A troop train took mem to NATTC Memphis, TN for training at AT(A) school. First duty station was Tach Test at NATC Patuxent River, MD. Transfered to VA 85 home based at NAS Oceana, VA. VA 85 deployed on The USS Lake Champlain with CAG-8 from Sept 1954 to April 1955. After reinlisted I was at FASRON 51 in NAAS Sanford FL. 1955-1958. VAW-33 at NAS Quonset Point, RI. I was assigned to Det 41 and made a med cruise that started out on the USS Independance. On arriving in the Med Det 41 was sent to NAF Sigonella, Sicily. After a few months we were assign to CAG-3 aboard the USS Saratoga CVA 60. On 23 January 1961 the USS Saratoga had a raging fire in one of the engine rooms about 0400 that took til 0800 to get under control. After returning to NAS Quonset Point I transfered to NATTC Memphis for Instructor Duty I taught in AFU(A) in Phase 3 and 4. While at NATTC I made CPO and went to CPO Leadership School at Pensacola, FL where graduated with Class 63-B 3rd platoon. In 1965 I was assigned to VA 55 stationed at NAS Lemoore, CA. VA 55 made two WestPAC cruises aboard the USS Ranger CVA 61 and USS Constellation CVA 64. In 1968 I was transfered to NATC Patuxent River where I was musterd out.

For those who were wondering who "BMC(SW)" is, the name is Bill "Goose" Downs. I was given the nickname of "Goose" by a great friend and shipmate, BMC(SW) Al Thewissen. I answer to both Bill and Goose, feel free to contact me anytime at my email address, bmcsw@2hotmail.com. The deployment began on January 6, 1966 at RTC, Great Lakes, IL, from RTC I sailed south to Key West and the USS Bushnell (AS-15)in March of 1966, from Key West I sailed east to Rota, Spain and the USS Canopus (as-34) in October of 1967, after retruning stateside in June of 1969 I went TAD to CIVLANT until February of 1973 when I again salied south to Mayport and the USS Kalamazoo (AOR-6) making some training stops in Charleston, SC and Williamsburg, VA, before commissioning "the 'Zoo" in August of '73 at the old Boston Naval Shipyard with "Old Ironsides" witnessing the grand affair. From "the 'Zoo" I joined up with the USS Stribling (DD-867) in 1975 at Mayport and sailed to Charleston in 1976 to join the USS Cone (DD-866) after decommissioning the Stribling. In 1978 I sailed north for a tour back at RTC Great Lakes, only now I wore the "red rope" and somehow the rules had changed (what do you mean I can't abuse "Rick"? My CC, SFC Kaminsky called it exercizing my body), after three years of exercizing Rick's body and "putting on the hat" I sailed west to Alameda and the USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3)in September of 1981. In September of 1983 I sailed west with the Niagara Falls to our new homeport in Guam and returned to stateside duty at NRC Milwaukee, WI for a short tour as a Recruiter in 1985. In 1986 I sailed east to New London, CT and my final tour of duty with NSSF where a lot of my shipmates brought a tear to my eye as they Piped me over the side for the last time. I retired from the Navy in February 1989 at the Naval Submarine Base at Groton, CT. There hasn't been a single day I haven't thought about the life I had in the Navy and there is hardly a night that I don't dream of being back aboard ship. If you are ever in Stevens Point, WI and need a cup of coffee and want to just shoot the shit with an old Boatswain Mate, stop in.

I had the name of a man who made replicas in Indiana, but he is no longer at the address or telephone number. I have searched for his name elsewhere and have found nothing. I have been retired for many years now but I do enjoy being able to keep up with my fellow CPO's through your great website. One thing, would it be possible to include a page for the SEABEES. All of the Navy is not "Haze Gray, Aviation, or Submarines. This weekend, I went to see the new movie "Men of Honor" starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert DeNeiro. They presented DeNeiro as a Master Chief during the time period of late '40's to early '50's. If my memory serves me correctly, there were no master or senior Chief Petty Officers before 1958. Please correct me if I am mistaken.
