I entered the Navy, bound for Aircraft carriers, in 1961. I went aboard a carrier. I went
aboard a Sub. I was hooked. I traded orders with a buddy (all's fair, remember).
After 'A' and 'C' schools ( I was taught the Mk 56 gun fire control system, as there were
no torpedo fire control schools available), I was bound for the USS TUNNY (SSG 282) at Pearl H
arbor. She wasn't to be there for 10 more days, so it was to be aboard the USS BARBERO
(SSG 317) for the wait. When the TUNNY arrived, and I boarded her, my life was changed
forever. She had fought in WWII and had a proud history. And, she was older than I was.
She was, also, stronger, cleaner, and much better than I was. The TUNNY was home for 3 great
years. If I had not been aboard her, I probably would not have stayed in the Navy. Then it
was on to the Nucs (after a short spell in a school designed for Sub FT's at Damneck, Virginia.
First aboard the USS Henry L. Stimson (SSBN 655B), from launching plus 6 years. Then to teach
at Subscol NLON. Then on to the USS Andrew Jackson (SSBN 619B) for 3 years. Then back to
Subscol NLON for another 3 Years. I retired in 1981 from Subscol

I was the old Senior Chief Enlisted Advisor for The USS Chief(MCM14) and plankowner. Last year
we had the great pleasure of flagging a 50 Yr old flag that was to be presented to the CPO
Club Little Creek for display. MCPON Hagan and my CPO mess had a ceremony to
do this. When I transferred in Jul 96 I turned over this flag to my relief
to have it mailed. Somehow it got lost in the mail. I have tried everything to locate
it. Is there anyway you can help me get the word out to have all personnel go to there
local post office or ask around to see if we can locate it.
