Comments: Ahoy, Master Chief! What a terrific site! I tried out for the boats in 1970, but couldn't pass eye exam, so opted for Data Systems pipeline instead. Left Mare Island early 1971 and served aboard USS England (DLG-22) until Jan 1977. Did four years at FCTCP SD as LPO for NTDS Maintenance Shop, then back to sea on USS Fox (CG-33) from April 1980 to March 1984. Put on "The Hat" Sep 1982 in a very moving but still somewhat hazy ceremony at the Senior Enlistedmen's Club at HMAS Sterling, Western Australia. Poor Aussies are probably still wondering what the hell all that was about! Left Fox for MOTU-5 SD in 1984 and spent 4 years there as a travelling technician (most rewarding tour of my career). Finished up with 2 years aboard USS Gridley (CG-21). Yeah, I guess you could say I had a soft spot for the cruisers...Now I work for a DoD contractor as a mechanical designer and spend part of my job doing installs and tear-outs of JTIDS systems on the boats. To all old shipmates out there: Love to hear from most of you (Hey, you can't get along with everyone, y'know...). I spent half my adult life as a "Cold Warrior" training to fight Russians at sea. I miss the places I went and a lot of the shipmates with whom I served.

I am now doing work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in NM, I'm the lead electrical tech on the Neutron Tube Target loader NTTL.(Weapons work). There are a lot of ex bubble heads here, mostely NUKES, the civilian nuclear arena sure likes the training the Navy provides. Keep up this excellent site, sail on!!

I'm presently a Select Reservist drilling out of NAR Jacksonville, FL. My unit is Tactical Support Center 0574 (TSC-574) and I've been with them since January of 1996. Prior to that I was with VTU-7474 for 2 years, also with NAR Jacksonville. Before that, I was in the IRR for 1 year. I've been in the Navy slightly over 18 years (12 active and 6+ as a Reservist). My Active Duty time was spent stationed with VS-31 at NAS Cecil Field, VQ-2 in Rota Spain, and VS-31 at NAS North Island. I've made cruises on the USS Enterprise, USS Constellation, USS Eisenhower, and USS George Washington. I presently live in Jacksonville, FL with my wife and 2 children, and am employed as an Computer Network Engineer with a major US bank.

I was invited to help initiate my Son-in-law, Louis Atteberry (Newly initiated DKC) and share in pinning on of the beloved collar devices. Lou's ship, USS Phillipine Sea out of JAX, unfortunately had to leave port to avoid Hurricane Floyd. Lou was initiated at sea but the pinning ceremony was held Saturday after the return. Many thanks to the CPO mess of the Phillipine Sea, Command MCPO and the sponsors for a wonderful time as well as a meaningful ceremony that Lou will not forget.

Left the Marines and back to the Navy in 46 for duty on a DMS where I relieved a HMC whose self winding watch had stopped. High point of career in 55 when I became the "old Goat" of MCB SPECIAL, Little America V Antarctica . Retired 62, taught Science , JrHigh for 20 years before retireing again. My students called me "Chief" and I loved it for "Once a Chief, Always a Chief"
