Name: Paul M Vassar From:Columbus OH. Time:12/26/2002 4:00:10pm Comments: I served aboard her from Nov.'75-Jun.'77. Although I entered the midships hatch for the first time as a kid with a year of training in radio, I spent two lowsy tours messcrankin' and driving the boat outa the seaman gang and as leading seaman-the amount of time in radio was maybe two months. I didn't mind too much ('cept for mess cranking). I got to drive her for a year or so and spend time up topside (lookout) under all kinds of weather and in wide open waters, flat calm and wicked storms (outside of San Fran.)and most of all in the straits of JUAN D, where the logging had'nt taken its toll yet and we witnessed beautiful, and pristine forests, hardly anything-or anyone ashore and white capped mountains in the far off skies, above the mists. Did one Westpac when Marcos was in his heyday-shit river, Olongopo and you know the rest (if you were there b-for it all ended) I love the book "Blind mans Bluff" cause it validates some of my experiences that seem so far off. I won best Helmsman which was a double edged sword of sorts-especially in heavy seas while the spooks could do their thing and I shouda been in my bunk. Needless to say I lost a lot of sleep. I earned my dolphins after about ten months-as a kid (20 at the time) it was a relief departing the ranks of NQP's! Mid-seventies was a crazy time onboard her-the beer machines in the barracks the Pumproom with (for a time) topless dancers. All in all I suppose it was worth it, good and bad-it changed me forever. I got my bennies and went to Ohio State (National Champs? in football Jan 3rd?) Dig it. Fair winds, following seas fellow bubble heads! Although we were trained for some serious (ungodly) warfare, please-lets pray for peace. |
